Multi-arm POF-Splitters: 1x3, 1x4, 1x5, 1x7 POF-Splitter

Multi-arm POF-Splitters are of particular interest for fiber optic sensors technology. To avoid unnecessary splitting losses due to too large gussets, special manufactoring processes are used.

1×3 POF-Splitter

The typical excess loss of 1×3 POF-Splitter is 2.3dB. This is achieved by forming the POF waveguide endfaces at the splitter tip in a way to reduce losses from gussets as far as possible.

At the splitter tip there is a ferrule for 2.2mm jacketed POF cable that can be fixed with a lock nut adapter screw. The splitter branches are equipped with metal crimp ferrules for 2.2mm jacketed POF cable, too.

Main application of 1×3 POF splitter are fiber optic sensors; e.g. if light from 3 LED with different colours is coupled to a POF cable to realize a colour sensor.

It is feasible to isolate one or more splitter branches optically, in order to realize high crosstalk attenuation between the splitter branches.

1×4 POF-Splitter

The typical excess loss of 1×4 POF-Splitter is 2.5dB.

1x5 POF-Splitter

The typical excess loss of 1×5 POF splitter is 2.8dB.

1×7 POF-Splitter

1×7 POF splitter have a typical excess loss of 4dB. A taper element is used to transform the light from the splitter tip to the 7 outgoing fibers as uniform as possible.

At the splitter tip there is a ferrule for 2.2mm jacketed POF cable that can be fixed with a lock nut adapter screw. The splitter branches are equipped with metal crimp ferrules for 2.2mm jacketed POF cable, too

1x19 POF-Splitter

Following the design rules for 1×7 POF-Splitters, 1×19 POF-Splitters can be fabricated, too. Please notice that the splitting loss of a 1×19 POF-Splitter by itself causes an insertion loss of about 13dB. But, the increasing dynamic range of state of the art fiber optic sensor systems lets grow the future interest in 1×19 POF-Splitter for fiber optic multi point sensors.

Multi-arm POF-Splitters can also be coupled to one or more LED, see further information under “active POF-Splitters“.
